“Silence breaks apart brightness comes to life stream of sounds wash away the darkness from my soul you know i’ll return this won’t change my faith but for now wash away the darkness from my heart” – The Fountain
“You are waiting far on the other side, in the forest, in the dark, will i find you there, when you close my eyes”
“Need to find the passage to the light, to revive”
“Eyes on every corner, shine among the woods, whispers and voices, and my starving truth, i thought i had it covered, i thought i had it down, warm breath of fear, lycanthropic smile”
“Run through your shaded woods, run through your shaded mind, run through the night, run away, run through the darkness, run”
“I’ve come this far, and still remember, even though, i would like to forget, consequences of my choice, caught up to me, as the prophecy fulfilled, i yearn”
E’ pura catarsi.
“You had to stop in the middle of life and live in a cavern of lies whenever you were pulling away from yourself they made you believe it’s okay forced you to stand still stop moving to vegetate but you always wanted to dance you always wanted to dance you always wanted to dance”
“Summertime, a perfect moment, i will give myself another try, sun rays break through the branches, ancient sacrifice”
“So goodbye, we part our ways, it’s the point of no return, my love, i’ve crossed this bridge, oh maybe seven times, but only now i feel calm”
“If i pray, will you help me to get out, if i pray, will you help me to become, need to find the passage to the light, to revive” – The Passage

"Silence breaks apart brightness comes to life stream of sounds wash away the darkness from my soul you know i'll return this won't change my faith but for now wash away the darkness from my heart" - The Fountain
To go back to talking about Mariusz Duda is like discovering a trunk that was left in the dust for a long time, hidden for eons in some dark corner of the mind. A casket that rewards the gaze with memories and emotions, witnesses of friendships and dreams that thanks to this music have grown, and still do today. A parallel project to what Duda has always carried out with the progressive band Riverside (of which he is voice and bass), Lunatic Soul has been since 2008 the place where his desire for experimentation and research converge, between echoes of distant lands and forgotten cultures. Each album is a small part of a larger project, of an imaginary scheme where each piece of the record has its own colour, fitting into an organigram in which light and shadow, life and death, contrast while remaining united.
A refuge in which to find comfort for one's pain and joy for one's successes. In which to accept one's weaknesses and be reborn spiritually and physically. After Fractured and Under The Fragmented Sky, two albums in which the aegis through which to speak and defend oneself was electronics and red, the 13 November was released on the Kscope label "Through Shaded Woods".
Nature, dazzling beauty and mother, is the protagonist of this bewitching and shamanic record, in which this ancestral force converges towards itself, becoming a luminous panacea that spreads from the green of the trees to the human heart. It is this search for light, this spasmodic hunt for the heresy of shadows, the beating heart of these 6 tracks (the deluxe edition contains 3 more: Vyraj, Hylophobia, Transition II).
The beginning of the journey is entrusted to Navvie, an instrumental piece in which ancestral echoes of ritual dances appear from the very beginning, with Mariusz's voice often leading the rhythm of this inaugural dance through the words of a forgotten language. Suddenly we too are there, among secular trees and majestic foliage, moving like leaves in the wind in constant balance between the physical and spiritual worlds, just like the girls in the wonderful video that accompanied the release of this piece (and second single from the album).
The acoustic guitar and bass guitar, together with Mariusz's persuasive voice, are the roots through which the mystical and healing energy of these tracks radiates, and although the album is not a pure concept, we move on a cohesive musical path free of broken bushes. The Passage, first single extracted, is the second longest track on the album and moves along a carpet of ever-changing arpeggios. It is the real beginning of the pilgrimage, the moment when Mariusz accompanies us in the dazzling darkness of the forest in search of that light that seems to constantly slip away, almost invisible among the fears and doubts of our lives.
"You are waiting far on the other side, in the forest, in the dark, will i find you there, when you close my eyes".
Between ancient pagan deities and moments of pure tension, the different movements of the piece are skilfully articulated in leading the research towards a crescendo climax. Inside the album you can perceive echoes of bands like Heilung, Danheim, Wardruna, without ever losing sight of what is the essence of the "Moon Soul". Duda draws on a common folklore to transfigure it through his own sensibility and art, succeeding in the not easy task of approaching and intriguing even the laymen of Scandinavian and Slavic folk.
"Need to find the passage to the light, to revive".
Continuing along endless paths, the trees seem to lean out to observe restlessly, and perhaps they are not the only ones. The title track transforms this restlessness into a game of mirrors in which each branch is the spectrum of the one next to it.
"Eyes on every corner, shine among the woods, whispers and voices, and my starving truth, i thought i had it covered, i thought i had it down, warm breath of fear, lycanthropic smile".
The forest that bewitches and terrifies, a beautifully translated contrast between the reverberation of Mariusz's voice and the dreamy stillness of the central passage, in which the bass alone sustains with its small light this need to flee, to run through the darkness.
"Run through your shaded woods, run through your shaded mind, run through the night, run away, run through the darkness, run".
Oblivion opens with the advance of the percussions to which is suddenly added the roaring song of the lost warrior, far from home and lost in the darkness of this wandering but in continuous search of the peace that only a new beginning can give.
Duda, who in this album for the first time plays all the instruments, fills the track with a rhythmic contrast between the pagan and tribal dimension given by the percussions and the oneiric one that the acoustic sound of the guitar evokes, elevating the piece to a solemn and melancholic preamble of what will be the last dance: Summoning Dance.
"I've come like this far, and still remember, even though, i would like to forget, consequences of my choice, caught up to me, as the prophecy fulfilled, i yearn".
The penultimate track on the tracklist symbolises the attainment of awareness, amplifying the beneficial feeling that permeates this wonderful record work in a 9-minute mini suite, where a perfect synaesthesia between nature and poetry is achieved.
The initial sweetness slowly leaves the field to a rhythmic crescendo in which the bass gradually increases its intensity, in a sound vortex that takes place neither time nor form. It is pure catharsis.
"You had to stop in the middle of life and live in a cavern of lies whenever you were pulling away from yourself they made you believe it's okay forced you to stand still stop moving to vegetate but you always wanted to dance you always wanted to dance"
In the epilogue of the album, The Fountain (third and last single), the mind awakens and each conflict appears as a distant echo of a past life. The piano is the driving soul of this moving final act through which silence and darkness are flooded with light.
"Summertime, a perfect moment, i will give myself another try, sun rays break through the branches, ancient sacrifice".
A simply splendid ballad, the culmination of an album that has few equals in this troubled 2020. "So goodbye, we part our ways, it's the point of no return, my love, i've crossed this bridge, oh maybe seven times, but only now i feel calm"
A small final note deserves the second disc, a bonus of the double edition on CD and the digital deluxe edition. Vyraj and Hylophobia, both instrumental tracks, move on rhythmic tracks that follow those of the main disc amplifying the more "rock" nuances. Transition II instead, well, it's pure magic. The 27 minutes of its duration contain the entire iconographic, poetic, musical universe that Duda has poured into the Lunatic Soul project since 2008.
Opposites of this long track are the words of the very first album with The Final Truth, of Transition I contained in the second recording chapter, up to the recent past of Hev Av En in Under The Fragmented Sky. But in fact, each record of the moody soul reverberates its own light in this "small" masterpiece, in a continuous alternation of colours and moods such as to destabilise our emotional awareness.
Stunned by so much beauty, it awakens us changed, with our gaze towards dawn and our backs to the abandoned darkness. In such a disastrous year as this, Through Shaded Woods is a splendid talisman of ancestral power, a remarkable work for all those seeking guidance through the dense dark forest that stretches endlessly, inside and outside our physical body.
To see the light again, to see the stars again.
